The so-called “volcanoes” on Jupiter’s moon Io have long been conventionally interpreted as the effect of tidal forces acting on the moon. But a recent scientific paper has announced that this longstanding explanation does not fit with the actual location of the plumes. Is it possible that this failure of theory could cause planetary scientists to reconsider the electrical explanation first offered by astrophysicist Thomas Gold and later by plasma scientists Anthony Peratt and Alex Dessler?

Andrea Johnson from Greenlee demonstrates a few of the many tools she has on display.

According to a recent paper, scientists are now exploring whether so-called “electrical sparking may occur on the moon, altering the lunar soil. The scientists have developed computer models to explore how strong electric fields might accumulate in permanently shadowed regions on the moon, creating electrical sparking that fragments soil grains. Wal Thornhill offers a brief overview of the evidence of vastly greater, high-scale electrical discharge events that shaped the lunar surface.

A new NASA report describes the potential dangers that electrical environments of asteroids could pose for astronauts in future space missions. NASA scientists are now attempting to create models that will successfully predict dangerous electrical interactions between an approaching spacecraft and an asteroid. The report begins with a brief, surprising description of space rarely seen in official press releases.

An ice-covered tree limb falling onto a power line. Captured live by WHO TV Channel 13 out of Des Moines, Iowa, on February 25, 2007. The limb fell directly onto the line, causing a series of explosions of the transformers of the grid.

This happened in Urbandale, IA. I’m a member of the Urbandale Fire Dept. and was at this scene (just slightly out of camera view) to the right where our fire engine was parked. The guy running and diving in the background was also on the engine with me. We initially were called out on a report of a tree on fire.
When we first arrived on scene, we had parked almost directly under where the power lines were. Our dispatch information did not mention anything about problems with the power lines. Once we saw how close the branch was to the power lines, we moved back to a safe distance. About 5 minutes later, the branch fell and then you see what happens in the video.
It was pure luck that the camera crew was there at the time they were. The “explosion” was pretty intense. You could feel the vibration from it in the ground over 50 ft. away.
