In April of 2015, the NASA Dawn Spacecraft began transmitting new, close-up images of the mysterious dwarf planet Ceres. The images to date have only deepened the mystery surrounding the puzzling bright spots on the planet’s surface. However, in addition to this ongoing puzzle, questions remain about Ceres that planetary scientists seem unready to ask. The surface of Ceres is massively cratered, with a variety of types of craters, including so-called bulls-eye craters (craters with central craters), craters with central peaks, and weird hexagonal craters, such as those seen on Mars, Mercury, and the Saturnian moon Mimas. Dawn’s exploration of Ceres is a startling reminder of just how inadequately the modern theory of planetary cratering explains what we actually see on planets and moons.

In the previous Space News, physicist Wal Thornhill discussed the recent report that giant filamentary networks pervade the Milky Way galaxy, and these filaments are “closely linked to the formation of stars.” We now turn our attention to our own celestial neighborhood, and the electrical connection between the Earth and the Sun. An Australian undergraduate student is now being credited with having proven the existence of so-called plasma ducts, or oddly shaped, tubular plasma structures, above the Earth. Wal Thornhill discusses the significance of this discovery for the Electric Universe theory.

When one gazes at our celestial neighborhood, the planets, moons, comets and asteroids we see defy the speculative history we learned in school. These bodies testify to events not included in any geology textbook. The evidence seem undeniable — high-energy electromagnetic events have indelibly scarred, and in some cases devastated the rocky bodies in our solar system. Today, we delve into the very core of one of the great controversies in solar physics. In the 1960’s, scientists first discovered that the number of solar neutrinos detected on Earth did not fit the predictions of the standard model of the Sun. In this model, the sun is powered at its core by a thermonuclear reaction, and the production of neutrinos occurs in the Sun’s interior. In more recent years, scientists have adjusted some of their ideas about neutrinos, and news headlines have pronounced that the mystery has been resolved. But should the neutrino problem really be laid to rest? To explore this question, we asked Wal Thornhill for an overview of neutrino production in the Electric Sun model.

Sudbury – The Greater Sudbury Hydro Plus and Electrical Safety and Conservation are teaching school children from JK to grade 8 about electrical safety.

Scientists in Germany using the Hubble space telescope have detected extremely strong magnetic fields in a quasar which is said to be about 4 billion light years from Earth. The magnetic fields were measured at 200 million Gauss. In comparison, the strength of the magnetic field at Earth’s surface is only about one Gauss. The scientists state that the magnetic fields are very close to the quasar’s theoretical, central black hole. However, how confident should astrophysicists be in their ideas about cosmic magnetic fields, or their belief in the existence of black holes?
