Monday was the 6th birthday of the bull market in U.S. stocks; the S&P has climbed about 206% since 2009. Stocks bounced back from last week’s selloff with no major economic data releases to rock the boat. But the roller coaster ride started on Tuesday when stocks plunged 1.5%, erasing their entire gains for the year so far. Markets couldn’t shake off the pressure from a surge in the dollar and weakness in oil. On Wednesday the dollar continued its relentless rally and the euro touched a new 12-year low. On Thursday retail sales declined 0.6% in February but cheap gasoline prices are not to blame this time; it was the latest auto sales number, which dropped 2.5%. Initial jobless claims fell a very steep 36,000 in the first week of March to 289,000. Stocks rallied into the close after a shaky two days; the rebound was probably in response to many investors who think the Fed will not be raising interest rates due to the mixed economic data. The roller coaster ride continued on Friday with the market trading off the dollar; U.S. Producer Price index for February showed a decline of 0.5 percent, missing earlier estimates.

    Now some company highlights:
First, Apple unveiled its first smartwatch and a new MacBook Air in a media event on Monday. Tim Cook said the watch is Apple’s most personal device; but it was also positioned as a fashion accessory. Apple Watch is the company’s first all-new product since iPad launched in 2010.
Barnes & Noble, the bookstore dropped 10% on Tuesday as earnings came in below Wall Street’s forecasts. The bookstore had planned to spin off its college books business by August, along with its Nook tablets and e-book section. But the company had to pay 55 percent more income tax in the third quarter. Barnes & Noble said its bottom line was hurt by higher tax bills.
Lumber Liquidators, which was battered by a “60 Minutes” report on the safety of its flooring products, continues to trade in volatile pattern, driven by commentaries both positive and negative, on the future of the company. Lumber Liquidators has been trying to repair its reputation over product safety issues, by saying they will now allow customers to freely test their products to ensure its safety.
Warren Resources jumped 13.9 percent on Wednesday after the oil and gas company beat earnings projections. Warren Resources produced about 9.1 billion cubic feet of gas equivalent in the fourth quarter. The New York based company posted a revenue of million.

    Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL)

    Barnes & Noble (NYSE: BKS)

On Monday, existing home sales for January were released, dropping a disappointing 4.9% month to month. Economists say existing homeowners are staying put longer due to economic uncertainty and this is creating a supply shortage, which in turn keeps prices high and lowers sales.
On Tuesday, Fed Chair Janet Yellen testified before the Senate Banking Committee and said the magic words: no rate hike is expected for the next couple of Fed meetings. This led to modest rallies. Consumer confidence for February fell more than expected, to 96.4, compared to 102.9 in January.

On Wednesday, new home sales for January were better than expected at 481,000 units, only dropping very slightly from the previous month. Oil futures increased slightly to a barrel. Markets didn’t do much, although they hovered close to record highs.

On Thursday, the consumer price index for January showed a month to month decline of .7%, thanks to a decline in energy. Durable goods for January were up 2.8% month to month after declining 3.7% in the prior month. Jobless claims for the week ending February 21st were unexpectedly high at 313,000, up 31,000.

On Friday, the revised fourth quarter GDP came in at 2.2%, down from the original estimated 2.6%. Also released was pending home sales for existing homes in January. The index rose 1.7% month to month, and it is now 8.4% higher than the year ago. Markets were relatively unchanged on the news. Now let’s take a look at some
    stocks.

Aruba Networks, Inc. shares soared over 20% after trading hours Wednesday when rumors surfaced that the technology company is in talks to get acquired by Hewlett-Packard. If in fact, these two companies combine, Cisco Systems would face major competition in the wireless
    equipment sector.

Sears Holdings Corporation’s stock plummeted more than 6% on Thursday after reporting its fourth straight year of decreasing earnings. The retailer has taken numerous preventative measure including cost cutting and store closures, but this has not been good enough to reverse the downward trend. For the period ended January 31st, Sears lost 0 million or .50 per share while revenues decreased to .1 billion from .6 billion.

DryShips, Inc. reported weak fourth quarter earnings, with a million net loss or $.04 per share, slightly better than the year-ago loss of .4 million or $.06 per share. Net income was reported at only {videoDescription}.02 per share, missing forecasts of {videoDescription}.05 per share. The company’s stock was down just over 3% on Thursday.

CollabRx, Inc. shares plummeted more than 34% Thursday after the healthcare technology company priced a public offering of 2.4 million shares of common stock at .27 per share. This would be the second public offering by CollabRx within a week; the previous offering was priced at .25 per share for 3.8 million shares.

    Aruba Networks Inc. (NASDAQ: ARUN)
    Sears Holding Corp. (NASDAQ: SHLD)

To start the week U.S. stocks lost ground as markets were still digesting headlines out of Greece over the weekend, which showed little progress had been made between Greece and the EU.

On Tuesday stocks staged a huge rally; investors were able to shake off early negative news from Greece on hopes of a resolution. The latest Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey report showed slight improvement with over 5 million job openings on the last business day of December, the highest in more than a decade.

On Wednesday stocks closed mixed following a very choppy day of trading; investors continued to watch for developments in negotiations between Greece and EU finance ministers. The U.S. budget deficit widened in January, fueled in part by higher spending on health care services for low-income Americans.

On Thursday stocks and oil surged with the tech-heavy NASDAQ leading the way for stocks as oil prices bounced back after two straight losing days. A cease-fire agreement between Russia and Ukraine came in early Thursday and sent futures higher. On the economic data front, retail sales declined 0.8%; the weekly jobless claims came in higher at 304,000 last week.

On Friday import prices fell 2.8 percent in January alone for year-on-year contraction of 8 percent. Deflation is a rising risk for the economic outlook based on import and export price data where contraction is at its most severe since the 2008 recession.

On Monday, the Institute for Supply Management’s January index dropped 1.6 points to 53.5, weaker than expected. Personal income for December rose .3% month to month while consumer spending dropped .3% month to month. Markets were down until oil prices rose, sparking a rally that ended with the Dow Industrials up 196 points.

On Tuesday, factory orders for December fell sharply by 3.4%, marking the 5th straight decline. However, the motor vehicle sales report for January was released, and those numbers came in slightly ahead of expectations, at 16.7 million units. That, combined with continuing increases in the price of crude oil, gave markets a huge boost, with the Dow Industrials closing up 305 points, or 1.8%.

On Wednesday, ADP released their employment report for January, and it came in at 213,000, down 28,000 and below expectations. The European Central Bank also tightened collateral requirements for Greek debt, forcing Greek banks to obtain funding at higher rates. This news caused stocks to end mostly lower on the day.

On Thursday, jobless claims for the week ending January 31st were 278,000, up 11,000, but below expectations, and the U.S. trade deficit increased unexpectedly to a two-year high of .6 billion, due to less demand from overseas markets and the increased strength of the U.S. dollar. Oil rallied, and along with it, the Dow Industrials closed up 211 points.

On Friday, the nonfarm payroll for January was released, and it came in at 257,000 jobs, higher than expectations and the unemployment rate rose .1% to 5.7%.

Markets were closed on Monday for Martin Luther King Day. On Tuesday after switching direction multiple times during the session, U.S. stocks managed to finish higher in the final hour of trading. A late rise in technology and airline shares gave the markets a lift but the price of WTI crude oil fell as much as 5%. In addition, the market is still digesting the impact of last week’s currency action set off by the Swiss National Bank. The IMF cut its outlook for global economic growth for 2015 and 2016, projecting growth of 3.5 percent this year and 3.7 percent for next. The National Association of Home Builders reported solid conditions with the housing market index at 57 in January.

On Wednesday stocks continued to rise on Wall Street. The biggest story on Wednesday came from Canada, where the Bank of Canada slashed the main overnight interest rate to 0.75%, a move that sent Canadian stocks higher and the Canadian dollar weaker. In the housing market, we got some good news as Housing Starts climbed 4.4%. Housing activity picked up in December and this time strength was in the single-family component.

Markets staged a huge rally on Thursday after the European Central Bank announced it would start a much anticipated quantitative easing program to stave off deflation in the Eurozone. The ECB said on Thursday that starting in March it will purchase billion of bonds per month until September 2016. Earnings season is kicking into high gear, companies like Southwest Airlines (NYSE: LUV), Delta Airlines (NYSE: DAL), United Health and Union Pacific (NYSE: UNP) all posted upbeat earnings reports, but Johnson & Johnson (NYSE: JNJ), Morgan Stanley (NYSE: MS), and IBM (NYSE: IBM) were among the others that didn’t perform so well. Next week we will get one of the most watched reports on Wall Street from Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL). On Friday U.S. stocks opened mostly lower as investors considered economic data, earnings and energy costs.
